Bath Terrace Lighthouse

Lighthouse In Blyth, Northumberland

A lighthouse situated 100m inland in Bath Terrace, Blyth.

Also known as the High Light Lighthouse it is one of the oldest structures in Blyth. Located to the rear of Bath Terrace in Blyth it stands at 18.74 m (61 ft 6 in) and was built in a number of sections.

The lighthouse is situated around 100m inland, but when it was initially built it was obviously only a few metres from the shoreline.

The first section was built in 1788 with a height of 35ft and then raised by another 14ft a century later. In 1900 it was raised by a further 12.5ft to its final height with each section being built due to the rising heights of the surrounding buildings. It was eventually de-activated in 1985, when new navigational aids were brought into use, and became a Grade II listed building in 1987.

The lighthouse building has a flat roof with railings, and is internally climbed spiral staircase and then ladders for its later top two sections.

The lighthouse was one of 2 and worked in conjunction with Low Light which has apparently been demolished.

Here is a quick up and down from Red 5.

Apologies for the quality of the photos, but some sea fret rolled in just as we arrived!

There is plenty of parking in the town centre, but you could probably just park in the back lane nearby to the lighthouse.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue Pele tower up a remote hill or a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
