A 14th century ruined castle managed by the English Heritage.
Edlingham Castle is a ruined, grade I listed building in the small hamlet of Edlingham, close to Edlingham burn.
The castle was a fortified manor house used to guard the approach to Alnwick to its west during the wars of Scottish Independence in the 13th and 14th centuries.
The castle is mainly at ground level, aside from the central 'Solar Tower' which has several storeys and an iconic crack running from top to bottom.
The nearby church of St John the Baptist (pictured below) is also worth a look. It is a Norman church built in the late 11th century, which may have also been used to imprison Moss-troopers.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
