God's Bridge

Bridge In Barnard Castle, County Durham

A natural limestone bridge on the Pennine Way.

If you're having a wander on the Pennine Way near the village of Bowes and need to cross the river Greta, then prepare to traverse using a heavenly crossing. Welcome to God's Bridge.

Formed by the river eroding the limestone beneath the river bed, this natural bridge allows you to enjoy the Pennine Way without getting your feet wet.

Now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the County Durham, it is known to be one of the best examples in the UK of a natural bridge formed by cave development.

It's a shame that the water was low and we couldn't see the river rushing through it. Fortunately our new Fabulous North friend Matt O'Brien who runs his My Yorkshire Dales blog sent us in these super photographs with the river in full flow!.

There are also a couple of lime kilns nearby to it to keep it company!

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue Pele tower up a remote hill or a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
