Ninebanks Tower

Tower In Allendale, Northumberland

An ornamental pele tower that was once part of a 16th century manor house.

This little 4 storey tower at the end of a row of houses once belonged to a 16th century manor house.

If you look closely, the heraldry above the window on the second floor relates it with Sir Thomas Dacre who was a ruler of Hexhamshire between 1515 and 1526.

The tower stood at junctions of other buildings implying that they were most likely arranged around a courtyard.

Although an imposing tower, its walls were thin and it wasn't very tall so it would never have been used as a defensive structure. Maybe it was for a show of power instead or even a lookout.

The tower has also been roofed and once made into a dovecot with flight ledges inserted into one of the windows.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue Pele tower up a remote hill or a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
