Down on the banks of the River Eden in Wetheral is a medieval cave called St.Constantine's Cell. Known locally as the Wetheral Safeguard it was used by the Priory of Wetheral in the 14th century for storage of grain and also for hiding during the Scottish incursions.

Legend says that St. Constantine used this caves during the 6th century when he was a hermit and may even be as old as the time of the Romans, who quarried here.

Lots of inscriptions around the walls.

Heading down the stone steps we found 3 chambers cut into the sandstone cliff with small windows and a fireplace. Access would have been by ladder before the steps were created.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue Pele tower up a remote hill or a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
