Bondville Model Village

Art In Bridlington, East Riding Of Yorkshire

Model village near Bridlington featuring local landmarks.

On a recent visit to Flamborough we had planned to visit Bempton Cliffs to see the Gannets, a number of walks along the coast and the icing on the cake was to be a boat trip around Flamborough Head to see the sea birds up close. Sadly our boat trip was cancelled due to the torrential rain, so we needed a plan B and we came across Bondville Model Village. The weather was so awful, we practically had the place to ourselves, however, in the summer months I can imagine Bondville will be a popular destination.

The quirky Bondville Model Village was originally constructed in the 1980s and reopened in May 2024 under new ownership. The model village set in a one acre garden, has over 800 residents and more than 200 buildings, ranging from a majestic castle to quaint pubs and a bustling cricket club in the heart of the village. There are some lovely details to spot as you walk round including miniature wares in shop windows and street names like 'Witts End'.

The new owners Rachel and Mark Hill have introduced a treasure hunt for children (and immature adults like us), transforming a visit into an interactive adventure. We are pretty competitive so we had to do the treasure hunt quiz and it really added something to the visit. The questions were along the lines of 'How many horses are there in the village?' and the one that will haunt us forever: 'What is on top of the dinghy?' I don't think my other half has recovered from us getting that one wrong. It certainly makes you take a closer look at the models and extends your visit while you're looking for the answers.

We met Mark at the end of our visit and he gave us the answers to the quiz and to our delight a huge sticker each that said 'We've been to Bondville Model Village'. Clearly, this is a place mainly for children, however, we did have fun and Mark was happy to indulge us. There is also a more grown up tearoom on site if you fancy a sit down and a cuppa after using all of that brain power.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
