Sizergh
Estate In Kendal, Cumbria
A medieval house with Tudor and 18th-century additions in Kendal, Cumbria.
I thought we had pretty much covered most of the National Trust places up in the North, but this odd sounding place called Sizergh popped up when we were scouring for new places to visit.
Sizergh is located near Kendal in Cumbria and is a medieval house with Tudor and 18th-century additions.
Sizergh has been the home of the Strickland family for over 750 years, with continuous ownership, so they will have overseen a huge chunk of it's history and transformation in what you see today.
The house showcases a mix of architectural styles from different periods. The oldest part, the Solar Tower, dates back to the 1300s and offers a little glimpse into medieval life.
Inside, you can wander through the Great Hall, where you'll see a collection of family portraits and stunning Elizabethan plasterwork on the ceiling. The rooms are filled with fine furniture and historic artifacts, each telling a part of Sizergh's rich story.
The gardens at Sizergh are beautiful and carefully designed to offer a bit of a peaceful retreat. There's a tranquil limestone rock garden, a picturesque pond, and a serene lake that reflects the surrounding greenery.
The orchard is a canny spot, especially in spring when the trees are in bloom. The estate's grounds are perfect for a leisurely saunter, offering a variety of plants and flowers throughout the seasons.
Sizergh is set in a vast 647 hectare estate that includes woodlands, wetlands, and farmland. The estate features several walking trails that allow visitors to explore the natural beauty of the area. More importantly, it has a banging ice cream shop!
Why is it called Sizergh?
The name Sizergh is derived from the Old Norse word Sigarith, which translates to a dairy farm. Maybe they had ice cream back in the olden days!
As with most National Trust properties there are toilets, a coffee shop (for a scone!) and adequate parking.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
