Guidelines

So you're still interested in joining the Fabulous North writing crew? That is sensational. You will have already spoken to one of the team so here is what's next.

Make a list of places you want to write up

These could be your own places or some of ours from the Coming Soon page. Send this list through to us to make sure no one else is writing up that place and we'll pop your name against it.

Look at existing places

Have a look around the Fabulous North website at existing places that have been written up to get a feel for how they are written. We write a mixture of history, facts and personal observation, but always try and make is fun and informative.

Follow these guidelines

Here are some guidelines to ensure all our articles are consistent and flow in the same way.

1. Have a bit of research of the place online or in books, also look at the photos you have in order to tell a bit of a story around it.

2. You may use AI to help with your research and to structure the page, but everything must be written in your own words.

3. If possible use headers for different parts of the article if it suits them.

4. Start the article with something light or personal, such as how you came to find the place. Did you find it by accident, or while scouring a map, or is it a place you've always wanted to go to.

5. Write facts about the place, its history and sprinkle in personal observation too. If it's a place that has loads of history, summarise it rather than cloning Wikipedia :)

6. Try and weave the article around the photos if possible. So if you mention a gravestone within the castle grounds, have the photo of the gravestone being the next photo.

7. Keep the article fun and friendly and we don't mind if you throw in the odd pun now and again.

8. If you are doing speech, enclose in double quotation marks and make it italics.

9. If you are emphasising a word or two, put in single quotation marks and make it italics.

10. Break up the text with a few words in bold too.

11. Finish the article with something personal or a little parting statement. For example “This was an amazing find and there are so many other hidden gems nearby.”, “Have always wanted to visit this place and will definitely come here again.” Rather than it just ending with the facts.

12. If you have used AI to help with any of the article, run it through a checker first - https://www.scribbr.co.uk/ai-detector/ to make sure it's 100% human.

13. If you have time, also pull out any key facts into a question and answer FAQ section. This helps us appear in Google and also for AI searches when people search for these questions. For example, for the Neidpath Tunnel, the questions could be - "How long is the Neidpath Tunnel?", "When was the Neidpath Tunnel built?", "When did the Neidpath Tunnel close?" Just think what people would type into Google for this particular place.

Send them to us

Best to send them to us one at a time in an email or Word document and we'll get them uploaded on the website.

How often to I have to write?

We're really laid back and if you want to write one article a week, or one a month or even just a handful of articles here and there, that's all cool. Any help is appreciated. Just whatever fits around you.
