Caiplie Doocot
Dovecote In Fife, Scotland
A rectangular lectern doocot that sits in a field next to the A917 near Caiplie.

If you are travelling in southern Fife along the A917, you can't miss the rectangular lectern style Caiplie Doocot sitting near the edge of a field next to the road. I couldn't resist stopping and giving it a quick visit.

The Doocot dates back to around 1739, it has a single chamber with crow stepped gable walls and a single front entrance. Although the roof has long gone and the nest boxes are damaged, but you can still imagine this Doocot being full of pigeons, providing eggs and meat to local people.

The first Doocot's were Doo Caves, one of which you can find to the west of here, at the Wemyss Caves. The next style that became commonplace was the beehive style of which you can find to the east of here at the wonderfully restored beehive Priory Doocot at Crail.

The Caiplie Doocot is a Category B listed building managed by Historic Environment Scotland.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
