Croxdale Hall Haybarn

Building In Croxdale, County Durham

Disused haybarn on the Croxdale Hall estate.

As it's definitely autumn now, we have been squeezing the life out of the remaining days of sunshine, and managed to catch some rays on a Saturday morning in October 2024. We headed for County Durham this time and visited the beautiful Croxdale Hall Estate.

I had recently spotted the magnificent haybarn online somewhere, and thought we could make a morning of it by walking around the estate too. There is a bit of a walk to the barn from the parking area, slightly uphill which takes around 15 minutes, so wear your best walking shoes. The barn is an impressive sight when you reach it and although it is not in use any more, it remains pretty much in tact.

There is not too much info on the haybarn and there is no definite date of when it was built, although it is said to pre-date 1815. There are two levels to it, and it is believed that hay would have been stored on the upper level, while animals were kept from the elements in the lower level.

Art historian Nicholas Pevsner was unusually impressed with it and described it as 'one of the best agricultural buildings in the county'. It's not often you see such a fancy barn with arched stone doorways and complex timber roofing. Obviously no expense was spared when creating it. Now though, we reckon a few million pounds could turn it into an excellent Grand Designs project.

The haybarn sits on the Croxdale Hall Estate and close to it is the hall itself and the Croxdale Hall Chapel. These are both on private land and not accessible to the public at any time. The estate has been owned by the Salvin family since the early 15th century and they still live there to this day.

The surrounding estate is open to the public however, and there are paths that take you through woodland and fields with stunning views over the Durham countryside. Worth noting that cows are free to roam on the estate and when we visited, there were cows with calves literally on the footpaths. Cows terrify me, but they barely noticed we were there so that was reassuring. Always follow the countryside code, however!

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
