Ulgham Village Cross

Religious Place In Ulgham, Northumberland

A preacher's cross erected by monks from Lindisfarne.

If you're passing through Ulgham or on your way to see the Ace Of Spades Dragline Bucket, then have a look out for the Ulgham Village Cross.

Sitting on the main street indented into a front garden is this Saxo Norman cross shaft. It was discovered in 1981-92 and could be as old as the 11th century.

There is a plaque which reads:

This is possibly a “preacher's cross” erected by itinerant monks from Lindisfarne in the middle of the Village green. The head of the cross could have been broken off by Roundhead troops who patrolled the area in the 1640s..

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue Pele tower up a remote hill or a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
