Scales of Justice Middlesbrough

Art In Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire

A playful sculpture showing the balancing act of settling a dispute.

If you have been summoned to court in Middlesbrough, it is worth having a look at the sculpture outside the front door, which is called Scales of Justice. It is certainly site-specific and was unveiled here in 1991. The artist is Graham Ibbeson (born 1951), who comes from Barnsley and is a sculptor and draughtsman. He is well known for his realistic figurative bronze work, such as Laurel and Hardy, and Eric Morecombe.

Ibbeson has the monocle of The People's Sculptor. His wife Carol Ibbeson was the model. She looks noble. The children were modelled on the artist and his sister as youngsters, they are squabbling and require the strong arms of the law of mum.

The figures are life-size and stand on a plinth, maybe to stop any shenanigans. Remember, no one is above the Law!
