Duachy Standing Stones
Standing Stone In Oban, Scotland
Three prehistoric standing stones overlooking Dubh Loch.
We've covered a few standing stones on the Fabulous North website, and the Duachy stones are our most northerly find yet. Two of the three standing stones have now fallen over unfortunately, possibly because their foundations weren't far enough into the ground and their sheer size and weight have pushed them over; or it may be that cattle have been using them as a scratching post and forced them over with their bulk. More evidence that cows should be avoided at all costs!
The stones range from 1.8 metres to 2.7 metres in height and overlook the beautiful Dubh Loch (Black Loch) and Beinn Mhor mountain. It's a very peaceful area and well worth the short climb from the parking space with spectacular views.
Despite the fact only one of them is standing, the site is still pretty impressive given they were put in place sometime between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, so between 2000 and 3000 years ago.
There's not too much more information on the standing stones at Duachy but they likely served multiple functions. They may have stood for religious purposes, community ceremonies or represented burial markers or territorial markers but there is no way of knowing for sure.
What is known is that these stones are a small part of the wider prehistoric landscape of this area. Short single rows of less than 10 large stones like the ones at Duachy are the most common type of stone row, and they are dotted around the west coast of Scotland, with several being found on Mull.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
