Fyrish Monument

Folly In Dingwall, Scotland

A fantastic large folly on a hill overlooking the Moray Firth near Dingwall in Scotland.

The Fyrish Monument was built in 1782 on Fyrish Hill overlooking the Cromarty Firth. It is a fantastic sight, perched on the hill and can be seen from the A9 around 20 miles north of Inverness.

It was build on the orders of Sir Hector Munro of Novar who served in India as a General. It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in India which General Munro took for the British in 1781.

As the local population were being cleared off the land they had worked for centuries by the Lords, survival was a problem and so it was built to keep the locals in labour. Sir Hector is said to have rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom in an effort to extend the amount of time the labourers worked in order to pay them for the additional hours.

To reach the monument, from the Novar Estate car park follow the Jubilee Path sign into the woods. The route is reasonably steep in places, but has a good path.

The path takes you over a footbridge and up a stone path before continuing through the woods.

You pass a pretty pond before the path continues and the views open up.

Soon the monument comes into view with a good path all the way.

The monument itself is as impressive as the views back over the Cromarty Firth.

It is 3km with 270m of ascent to reach the monument.

Follow the above route, or find on OS Maps.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
