Commemorative viewing tower in the Forest of Bowland, built in 1887.
The Jubilee Tower is situated on the edge of the Forest of Bowland and has stood there battling all weathers for nearly 140 years. It was built in 1887 by a chap called James Harrison, a successful shipbuilder, to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Lancashire Council took over care of the building in 1973 and made some improvements to the tower so that people could climb the stone stairs to the top and enjoy the views.
There are no windows or doors to the building, and it is thought the 4.5m high structure is infilled with stone. At 286m above sea level, it is worth the short climb to the top of the tower to enjoy views over to Heysham, the Lake District and as far as the Isle of Man.
When the council took over the care of the tower, they also very handily built a car park across the road so people could pause and spend a few minutes at the tower. In building the car park, the council uncovered a 7th century burial, now known as the Quernmore Burial. Only some hair and toenails remained of the body, however, the woollen shroud that the body was wrapped in was well preserved. The remains of the oak coffin and its contents are on display in the Lancaster City Museum.
If you fancy extending your visit to the area and are feeling fit, it is worth visiting the Clougha Pike Chambers around a 7km round trip, starting at the car park. You won't be disappointed!

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
