Greygarth Tower
Tower In Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire
A tower constructed in 1897 to mark the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria in Dallowgill, North Yorkshire.
The Greygarth Tower, also known as the Greygarth Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Monument, is unsurprisingly a monument celebrating the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897.
Before this tower was built there used to be something called the Greygarth Pinnacle up here which was a pointed tower. We read it was to mark (or maybe celebrate) the extinction of wolves from the local area.
The Greygarth Pinnacle was used by surveyors creating the first OS Maps so would have been one of the first triangulation points. There is no trig point here nowadays, but still worthy of a visit if you are into trig bagging.
It does sit on a high prominence compared to the local area so fab views all around.
The pinnacle was felled in a storm in February 1893 and the locals made plans to restore it making it taller and even with a weathercock on top, but those plans didn't come to fruition. Instead they decided to build a tower to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897.
I assume the ladder is a later addition so you get a slightly better view from the top.
The top of the tower started to crumble a bit until in 1984, the local councils chopped off the top and restored the Greygarth Tower to what you see today.
When looking on my OS Maps, the tower seemed to be on private land, with no permissive path, however when driving past the bottom of the hill we noticed a sign and style pointing the way to the tower. So we parked at the nearby Dallowgill Methodist Church and walked back along the road to the style and then up the hill.
