Art In Hartlepool, County Durham
Possible parametric art outside Hartlepool College of Further Education.
Whilst I was plane spotting in Hartlepool, my attention was caught by a flash of metal, so I had to go and have a look.
Metal art installations are becoming increasingly commonplace, and some pieces lend themselves to multiple interpretations.
There is no label, and my research did not uncover any information about this one (other than a generic name of Hartlepool Art). Now we all like a good nickname and I have named this Marilyn.
At one angle, my interpretation is that it is a representation of Marilyn Monroe's white pleated dress from the 1954 film The Seven Year Itch, which was famously photographed whilst she stood over a subway vent.
Another angle, and it may be a Swan fanning its wings.
It has an aesthetically pleasing nature with the flow of curves that ebb.
Does it remind you of anything? A whirlwind, a fan, swirl, purl? An eddy is a miniature whirlpool or whirlwind resulting from the current of a fluid that doubles back on itself.
Hartlepool College of Further Education has a Fabrication And Welding Department which could be the creators of this piece. I do not know how technical the welds are and from which direction they were made
My research took me to looking up parametric, augmented and abstract art. It all had me all in a spin. There is a lot of it about.
