Kinnoull Hill Tower
Folly In Perth, Scotland
A castellated folly on the edge of Kinnoull Hill above Perth.
Kinnoull Hill Tower is a castellated folly, tottering on a cliff edge of Kinnoull Hill above Perth.
If you have ever driven past Perth on the A90, you can't miss what looks like a mini castle perched high on the cliffs of Kinnoull Hill.
It is in fact a folly that was built in the 1800s by Thomas Hay the 9th Earl of Kinnoull.
He intended it to resemble the castles along the Rhine in Germany that he had much enjoyed on his European tour.
The rock on which the tower stands was formed from the volcanic lava of eruptions from over 400 million years ago.
Looking south from the tower, you can enjoy views of the River Tay as it winds down to the Firth of Tay.
Across the river stands Moncreiffe Hill with its Hill Forts. At its highest point, it is only 10m lower than the highest point of Kinnoull Hill.
Kinnoull Hill Tower is now jointly managed by Forestry and Land Scotland and Perth & Kinross Council.
Visit the tower on our Kinnoull Hill walk or take the direct route from the Quarry Car Park detailed below.
The route to the tower is 1.3km with 110m of ascent.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
