McCaig's Tower
Folly In Oban, Scotland
Monument built in 1897 by local banker John Stuart McCaig
If you've ever had the pleasure of visiting Oban in Argyll and Bute, the first thing you probably noticed was the imposing monument on top of Battery Hill, known as McCaig's Tower. The iconic landmark is impossible to miss from all angles and is worth a wander up the hill to see it in all its glory. There is a car park right outside the tower, but we like to do things the hard way, so we walked up from the bottom of the hill. This doesn't take long, maybe 10 minutes, but it is a fairly steep incline so bear that in mind.
The monument is actually a folly and was built in 1897 by a local banker named John Stuart McCaig. It was built as a lasting monument to the McCaig family and provided work for local stonemasons.
There were originally grander plans for the monument, which included 12 statues of the McCaig family, a tower and a museum within the centre, however, John McCaig died in 1902 before he could see his plans through.
His will stipulated that several thousand pounds should be made available each year to complete his project, however, his sister Catherine McCaig contested the will.
His sister had more philanthropic ideas for the money, and when she died her estate was used for charitable purposes. Catherine McCaigs Trust Scheme continues to award grants, bursaries and scholarships to students with Gaelic qualifications, who are embarking on a Gaelic course at a Scottish University.
Although John's grand plans were never completed in full, the folly is still an impressive building and the grounds inside are beautifully kept by Oban Town Council. It is a lovely place to escape the hustle and bustle of the town below. Of course from that vantage point, you are treated to beautiful views over Oban Harbour and to the islands beyond.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
