The Old Bridge of Livet
Bridge In Dufftown, Scotland
Possibly the oldest packhorse bridge in Scotland, which lost its third arch during the Muckle Spate of 1829.

The Old Bridge of Livet is arguably the oldest stone bridge in the Scottish Highlands. No one knows for sure exactly how old the bridge is, but it is thought to have been built around the same time as nearby Blairfindy Castle which was built in the 1500's.
This would be contested by those who say Carrbridge Old Packhorse Bridge is the oldest which was built in 1717.
Either way, it is a fantastic bridge and a joy to visit.

It is possible to walk over the right arch, but the left arch is chained off to prevent further damage.
There may now only be two arches to the bridge, but there was a third arch which was sadly destroyed by the floods during the great 'Muckle Spate' of 1829.

It is a fantastic spot to stop off for a picnic enjoy the bridge as the River Livet gently flows by.

There is a large parking area next to the bridge. Please be careful as it is on the bend in the road.

The Old Bridge of Livet is a Category B Listed Building with Historic Environment Scotland.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
