Ossian's Cave
Cave In Dunkeld, Scotland
A mysterious cave hidden deep in the woodlands of The Hermitage near Dunkeld.

Ossian's Cave can be found in the woodland of The Hermitage near Dunkeld.
Although it was originally a natural cave, it has been enhanced to provide a fantastic place to explore in The Hermitage woodlands.

When you first approach the cave, you could be forgiven for thinking you'd need to be a small child or a hobbit to enter. However, this is the back of the cave and the opening is a window, which provides a glimpse into the cave.
From the front, it is apparent that it has undergone some structural enhancements, with several large boulders forming the main structure of the cave. The stones have been positioned to allow window openings and the doorway has been built with a rounded top. Much of the structure is drystone wall with only part of the walls mortared.
Estate records suggest that the cave was possibly built in 1755, but as there is confusion as to whether this is the original Ossian's Cave, it is difficult to tell.
Apparently, there was an Ossian's poem inscribed on the wall of the cave, but unfortunately that is long gone.

From certain angles, the cave just looks like a pile of boulders.

Surprisingly, there is enough room for a few adults inside.

When we were trying to find the cave, we thought we had found it when we stumbled on these large rocks forming a cave.
On early OS maps, it shows the rocks as the site of 'Ossian's Cave', which is closer to the river. The cave we know as Ossian's Cave today is marked as 'Hermitage'. I wonder if this is where The Hermitage got it's name?
Many of the boulders have clearly been deliberately moved into position, which adds to the mystery.
It is still worth taking some time here to explore the crags next to the river.

Remember to take your time to investigate Ossian's Hall of Mirrors on your way to the cave.

Keep your eye's peeled for other interesting quirky things. If you fancy a slightly different path back to the car, try this Ossian's Cave Circular.

It is just over 1km to the cave.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
