This is the Bengairn trig point (391m) near Dalbeattie.

There is a good sized car park for Screel Hill which is used for both Screel Hill and Bengairn and both hills can be done together on a circular walk. Most use the Screel Hill route to go up and the Bengairn route to come back down. The following describes the route up to Bengairn only for bagging the trig point.

From the car park, head up the track as it bends to the right. Ignore a track off to the left, continuing until you reach a gate on the left, go through the gate, and follow the track. Red Kites can often be seen in this area.

Follow the track as it winds through a gorsy field.

Go through a second gate at the top of the field. As you close the gate, you can see the south east end of Screel Hill in the distance behind you.

Keep following the track as it winds through the forest and becomes more overgrown.

Go through the gate at the end of the track, go over the footbridge and follow the path as it turns right, heading up on your final ascent of Bengairn.

The path can be boggy and tussocky in places. It can also disappear at times!

Make your way west, heading for the highest point.

Towards the summit, the terrain turns less boggy with more of a rocky outcrop.

At the summit, you will be greeted with a large cairn and wind shelter containing the Bengairn trig point.

The views to the north west are over towards the Galloway Forest. Whilst to the south east views are over the Solway Firth.

It is 4.5km to the trig, with 400m of ascent. Follow the above route, or find on OS Maps.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
