Bow Fiddle Rock

Crag, Rock And Cairn In Cullen, Scotland

A 15 meter high uniquely shaped natural sea arch near Portknockie.

One of the most iconic natural formation on the north east coast of Scotland must be Bow Fiddle Rock.

I had wanted to visit this quirkily shaped natural phenomenon for years, and we finally had the chance when holidaying nearby.

Bow Fiddle Rock is a natural sea arch made of Quartzite, which is a rock that originates from quartz sandstone. This type of rock is common along the coast between Buckie and Cullen.

It is called Bow Fiddle because the shape of the rock looks like the tip of a violin bow.

I have it on good authority that the arch is 2400m thick, but I'm not entirely sure how that was measured. It apparently dates from the Neoproterozoic Era 1000 to 539 million years ago, which is well before my time, so I can't say for sure.

It is a fantastic spot for sitting either on the beach or up on the clifftops, enjoying the north sea air and the abundance of sea bird life in all its glory.

The car park for Bow Fiddle Rock is in the north east corner of Portknockie, and is only about 200m from the rock.

If you have the time, less than 1km to the east is the Portknockie Harbour, it is well worth a visit.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
