Echo Crags
Crag, Rock And Cairn In Byrness, Northumberland
A standstone semi-circular escarpment located above Catcleugh Reservoir near Byrness.

If you're having a day out at Catcleugh Reservoir or the Last Black Hut in Byrness, then you're only a short walk away (although all uphill) from a fabulous rocky outcrop called Echo Crags.

Sitting 450m up on Echo Rigg, Echo Crags is a weathered semi-circular sandstone escarpment.
These Carboniferous rocks are part of the Fell Sandstone and are 335 million years old.
The crags you now see are pock-marked and their texture is from the result of weathering from the last glacial period.

It's a wonderful place if you are into your geology. Or if, like me, you're more into sandwiches, then it's a super place for a picnic. It's about 3.5km from Byrness and 243m of ascent, so a canny slog to get to it. You will be spoilt with views over Catcleugh Reservoir and the hills near Carter Bar.
Follow the route above or open it in OS Maps.
If you're into trig bagging then the Hungry Law trig point is a couple of kilometres further north.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
