Brick Boat at Easington Colliery Library
Art In Peterlee, County Durham
Public art of a brick boat which was created by locals and is also a lovely rockery.
This brick boat is not something you would notice at first, and it is very unlikely that you can sail away in it!
The Brick Boat was installed next to Easington Colliery Library which has a jaunty blue nautical canopy over its entrance. It was commissioned by Easington District Council with funding from Visual Arts UK, and The European Development Fund.
The artist is Matthew Jarratt (born 1966) who worked alongside local groups and children. These children probably now have children as it was installed in 1996.
Art UK states:
"Rendered in red brick, is a child's representation of a small boat bobbing on the sea. The walls, which represent the sea, hold garden plants. Local children's relief carvings are baked into the bricks at the base of the boat and on top of the walls."
Matthew Jarratt studied at Sunderland and Northumbria Universities. He went on to be a creative broker and acts as a 'conduit, introducer and curator' He has been involved with commissioning various artworks in the North East such as Man with Potential Selves, Generation, and Temenos.
