The Circle by Richard Farrington was one of three sculptures created on the Cleveland coast as part of a 3 month 'New Milestones' residency commissioned by the local parish council. The circle, otherwise known as the 'Charm Bracelet' to locals, was created at the Skinningrove British Steel plant and is a nod to the industrial history of the area.
The sculpture is made of 10 steel 'charms' including a horse, cat and a mermaid's purse and each one is inspired by stories from local folklore or traditions. Originally, the inner section was made from an old lift shaft mast and the outer section from fish plate - a material used in fishing trawlers. Basically the scraps of steel lying around in the British Steel plant. Very eco friendy!
The original sculpture which was installed in 1990 was sadly vandalised in 1996, deliberately taken down and rolled into the sea. Some of the original charms were rescued, however, and put back in their rightful place. The new bracelet had a sturdier circle and was much more firmly anchored to prevent further vandalism.
You'll find the artwork on the Cleveland Way between Skinningrove and Saltburn close to Huntcliff Guibal fan house. A great area to explore and you can park at either Skinningrove or Saltburn and walk along the coast to see it.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
