Chester le Street Heritage Mural
Art In Chester-le-Street, County Durham
A vibrant mural painted on a gable-end wall, paying tribute to the history of Chester le Street.

If you've wandered through Chester-le-Street recently and spotted a new splash of colour brightening up a once-blank wall, you've found the town's very own heritage mural, painted in 2023 by local artist Terry Culkin.
Using good old emulsion paint, Terry turned bare bricks into a time machine. It's a visual love letter to the town, crammed with characters, landmarks, and a few surprises if you know where to look.

First up, we've got Roman soldiers standing proud, because back in the day, Chester-le-Street was known as Concangis, and the Romans were very much in residence.
Fast forward a few centuries and you'll spot Aldred the Scribe, mid-translation of the Lindisfarne Gospels into Anglo-Saxon. He's joined by a few Viking types, presumably the ones he escaped from when Holy Island was invaded.

The Dainty Dinah Toffee Factory gets a starring role, complete with the iconic lady who once perched atop the chimney.
You'll also spot some familiar landmarks including St Mary and St Cuthbert's Church, Chester Burn Viaduct which morphs into cricket stumps (a perfect merger of the industrial past and sporting present), Lumley Castle, Bethel United Reform Church and the town's War Memorial. With the the River Wear flowing through, connecting it all.
Now here's a detail that might surprise you: the Jarrow Marchers make an appearance. Why? Because Chester-le-Street was their first overnight stop on the famous 1936 protest walk to London. That little pause in the town gives it a quiet but proud place in the story of social change.
Speaking of 1936, if you're like me and love a little 'Easter egg', take a peek at the nearby post office. Hidden in plain sight is one of the few surviving Royal cyphers of King Edward VIII, installed before his abdication.

So next time you're in town, give the mural a moment. It's not just paint, it's Chester-le-Street's past, present, and personality, all rolled into one.

Adventurer, amateur photographer, and listophile. I love finding new and unusual places, especially a good waterfall or a place with Tudor era history, due to my small obsession with Henry VIII. I try to get out and about in the fresh air whenever I can, dragging my daughter along for the ride, to get her (and me) away from screens and devices.
