Corriemulzie Lime Kiln
Lime Kiln In Ballater, Scotland
A hidden lime kiln on the banks of the Corriemulzie Burn near Braemar.

The Corriemulzie Lime Kiln sits on the banks of the Corriemulzie Burn near Braemar. It is exceptionally well preserved considering the weather conditions that the area endures.
The Fabulous North team seem to always have one eye out for a lime kiln. I was not expecting to find one when coming down off the hills in Scotland.

There was in fact more lime kilns in this area, but this one is particularly well preserved. The kiln is built into the bank of the burn, around 2m above the bed of the burn.

The opening at the front of the kiln is the fireplace with a large lintel holding the dry stone in place.

The crushed limestone would be layered with wood and/or coal from above, before the fire was set alight.
Once the lime was cooled, it was raked out from the fireplace.

Lime has been used for centuries for building mortar and render. It was also used in agriculture to improve soil quality, but only when the coal was cheap enough to make it cost effective.

The kiln can be found in an absolutely stunning location with the hills in the background. The walk up to the kiln passes some pretty waterfalls with an information board, explaining the hydro power scheme and the wildlife in the area.

It is less than 1km to the Lime Kiln.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
