Art In Lancaster, Lancashire

A 300m artwork celebrating the link between birds and literature.

As you may know, we love puns and birds at Fabulous North so this artwork was right up our street. The artwork celebrates the link between birds and literature and stretches along the ground for 300m from Morecambe seafront to the railway station.

It is a really fun piece of art which was created in 2003 by sculptors Gordon Young and Russell Coleman in collaboration with graphic designer Andy Altman. It was created as part of a project called 'Tern' funded by Lancashire City Council. 'Tern' is a series of ornithological artworks around Morecambe including sculptures of birds on roundabouts and the statue of Eric Morecambe himself.

It certainly cheered our dreary day and we thoroughly enjoyed some of the limericks and jokes along the way. One of my favourite Christmas cracker jokes on the path was: 'Knock knock, who's there?, cook, cook who? That's the first one I've heard this year' Which I will be dazzling people with at any given opportunity.

You can also learn something about collective nouns for various birds too; a group of Guillemots is a 'bazaar' and a group of Starlings is a 'murmuration'. Every day is a school day.

There are Chinese proverbs too providing inspirational quotes as you go about your day: 'A man must stand a long time on a hillside with his mouth open before a roast duck flies in' reminds you to take action rather than let life pass you by. Very deep, and something to ponder before you go and get a selfie with Eric Morecambe.

There are many more quotes, poems, nursery rhymes and sayings along the path and it seems like the artwork was great fun for the team who put it together.

The pavement is made of granite, steel, brass and bronze and there are seats dotted along it where you can sit and enjoy the art. The bird theme obviously appealed to us as twitchers and there is a strong connection with birds to Morecambe Bay.

The bay is a haven for wildlife and over 240,000 birds visit every year. You can spot Curlew, Knot and Oystercatcher and you may even spot a Short-eared Owl if you're lucky. A must visit for fellow birdwatchers.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
