Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall
Waterfall In Newton Stewart, Scotland
A waterfall set within the stunning Galloway Forest Park.

The Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall can be found within the Galloway Forest Park, not far from Murray's Monument. For a waterfall that has contributed to the name of the Burn it is found on, road it is adjacent to, Bridge that is flows beneath and Car Park within the Forest, there is a remarkable lack of information about it.

The Grey Mare's Tail name is no doubt due to its resemblance to said equine feature, as it is a narrow stream, or series of streams, of white water cascading down the rock face to the plunge pool below.

Access is a little tricky as the vegetation is a bit overgrown but it is only a short walk from the Grey Mare's Tail Car Park to the waterfall itself. The initial view of it is from the Grey Mare's Tail Bridge, which crosses the Grey Mare's Tail Burn, and from here you have two options to get two very different views.

Follow the path along the left-hand side of the burn for a short distance to get a view of the lower part of the waterfall, or follow the track along the right-hand side of the burn up the hill where you can head off left towards the burn for a much better view from one of the upper plunge pools.

We chose to do both as we are adventurous sorts, although the scramble down from the higher path is the more difficult of the two. The Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall has a couple of cascades, the upper one of which is a spectacular drop into a plunge pool, which we are informed is good for wild swimming, while the lower one flows over and between the rocks before dropping from a lower height into the lower plunge pool.

The car park is a great location from which to visit a number of nearby sights such as Murray's Monument, Quorum, The Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall and The Eye.
