Sandstone tower built in 1904 used as a navigational aid until 1916
As you can see from the photos, we visited Heysham on a rather damp day and the photos don't do this old sandstone tower justice.
The attractive tower sits on the north pier of Heysham Harbour, overlooking Half Moon Bay. The tower was built in 1904 along with the harbour, and warned smaller vessels of the rocky area of Near Naze.
You can also spot the remains of another lighthouse on the rocks, which worked with the south pier lighthouse as a rear range light. The cast iron tower was demolished at some point, and the only part that remains is the base. It was likely turned off when the harbour was modernised for heavier ferry traffic.
As for the tower that still exists, this was no longer in use from 1916. Though it was used to warn vessels of the rocks, it was possibly an anemometer station too measuring wind speed.
I couldn't find much more info about the tower as it is not a listed building or a scheduled monument, which I was quite surprised to discover. It is also off the beaten track and surrounded by industrial buildings in the harbour, but it's still worth wandering along to see it.
The south pier lighthouse still exists too but apparently is in a bit of a sorry state. We didn't visit as we were soaked from the mizzle.
There is plenty to see in Heysham though and I can recommend a wander along the coast to see SHIP and the fascinating St Patrick's Chapel and it's stone cut graves.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
