A mural to Newcastle United legend Kevin Keegan.
The term "Legend" gets thrown around for fun these days, but if there was someone who is fully deserving of that status, it is Kevin Keegan. Special K, KK, Mighty Mouse (Mächtig Maus), however you knew him, he was a hugely popular figure in Newcastle, Liverpool, Hamburg and beyond.
Keegan played for Scunthorpe Utd, Liverpool, Hamburg SV, Southampton and Newcastle Utd as well as being an England international. He managed Newcastle Utd, Fulham, England and Manchester City, but it is Newcastle where he reached his legendary status. His team of entertainers brought excitement and belief back to the city and football club after he had saved them from relegation in the 1991-92 season.
Sadly, he never got to return to St James' Park to say goodbye, but he has been celebrated around the city with a series of murals that have popped up. This mural was created by Durham based artist "I Am Risk". It shows Keegan looking thoughtful on the touchline during a game.
From a distance it looks like a traditional stencil piece of street art, but once you get up close you can see how clever the artwork is. It is actually formed from over 500 individual images of Magpies and Newcastle Utd crests.
