Queen Victoria Memorial Statue
Statue In Scarborough, North Yorkshire
A bronze statue of Queen Victoria outside Scarborough Town Hall.
In Blighty, the most honoured person with a statue is Queen Victoria (1819 to 1901) with a whopping 175 statues. This one stands magnificently outside Scarborough Town Hall.
Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 when she was 18 years old till her death 1901.
Charles Bell Birch (1832 to 1893) was commissioned to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1897 and carved a statue in Carrara marble which is an off white colour from North West Italy. It was for Udaipur in India. Subsequently, at least eight copies have been cast in Bronze. They are in Aberdeen, Australia, Derbyshire, Guernsey, London, and Newcastle Under Lyme. This one was installed in 1903.
We know so many things about Queen Victoris here are some you may not know:
She was born Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent, fifth in line to the throne.
Queen Victoria described her childhood as melancholy.
In her childhood, her playtime was spent with her dolls and her king Charles dog 'Dash'.
She wrote and illustrated a story, 'The Adventures of Alice Laselles' which was eventually published in 2015.
Queen Victoria visited Scarbough for a few days and went to the spa. I wonder if she had to pay the toll to cross Cliff Bridge?
There is a pleasant walk through the small St Nicholas Park and you can enjoy the many fine views over the harbour and seaside. There is also the backdrop of the town hall and one of the three cliff lifts.
