Queen's Well
Art In Angus, Scotland
A magnificent stone structure resembling a royal crown to commemorate a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
If you've just entertained the Queen Of England by letting her have a slurp from your well, then the next step is naturally to build a royal crown structure over the top. And this is exactly what Lord Dalhousie did.
Having just purchased Balmoral Castle, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were enjoying a mooch around the mountain routes near their estate and travelled over to Glen Mark (around 14km away).
They were a bit parched from their excursions and fortunately met up with Lord Dalhousie beside an artesian well for a tipple before they continued on to Invermark Lodge.
Chuffed with the encounter Lord Dalhousie decided to build a monument over the well in the shape of a royal crown.
The inscription reads:
Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, and his Royal Highness the Prince Consort, visited this well and drank of its refreshing waters, on the 20th September, 1861, the year of Her Majesty's great sorrow.
No wonder they enjoyed this area, just look at those views.
If you fancy a wander to Queen's Well, then ditch your car at Invermark Castle and wander up a clear track.
Follow this route or open on OS Maps. It's just under 4km to the well with 68m of ascent.
Unfortunately this is not a place I have visited, but our new Fabulous North friend David Macdonald sent us all these wonderful photos.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
