Sewerby Hall

Estate In Bridlington, East Riding Of Yorkshire

50 acre estate, formerly owned by the Greame family and built in 1714.

The heart of Sewerby Hall lies in its Georgian core, constructed between 1714 and 1720 by John Greame. However, the house is much more than just a singular period and additions by the Greame family in the 1800s and 1890s showcase a fascinating architectural journey. The Graeme family were custodians of the estate up until 1934 when the house and part of the surrounding estate were sold to the Bridlington Corporation. In 1936 the hall became a tourist attraction opened by aviator Amy Johnson and during WW2 was briefly used as a hospital and convalescent home for the RAF.

In 2013 the estate was granted £949,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to breathe new life into the hall, and the rooms were restored to their former Edwardian glory. This era in the hall's life was chosen as there was photographic evidence of exactly how the house would have looked in 1910, and the furnishings from the Victoria and Albert collection ensure the hall feels as authentic as possible.

The surrounding 50 acres of early 19th-century parkland offer a haven of tranquility. Meticulously maintained gardens showcase a variety of plant life, each bloom adding a touch of colour to the landscape. There are all sorts of plants in the walled garden I had previously not heard of, such as Sunpatiens, Ageratum and Penstemon and some which are more familiar like Begonia and Fuschia. I'm sure that will mean something to the gardeners out there, though I do know the gardens did look beautiful even on the dreich day that we visited. The most impressive thing we spotted were the Monkey Puzzle trees which were enormous and probably reached about 20 metres high.

Adding another layer to the experience is the on-site zoo. Home to a diverse range of animals, the zoo allows visitors to encounter creatures from around the globe. On our visit, we met a friendly donkey, some pigs, emus and penguins. However there were also some stunning exotic birds to see including the Martin Scorsese lookalike aka the White-Crested Turaco, the David Bowie wannabe, the Golden Pheasant and the unfortunately named Bleeding-Heart Dove. The zoo was brilliant, and probably my favourite part of the whole day.

There is an entry fee for the hall, which is currently £11.50 for adults and gives you access to the hall, zoo and gardens. There is also a golf course on the estate and you can find out more about prices and access on the Sewerby Hall website. On our visit in May 2024 there was a bonus Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition showcasing images from around the world and this runs until 14th July 2024. There is also the lovely Clock Tower Cafe on site which does a delish Bakewell Slice and cup of tea and there are toilets nearby too. A great day out!

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
