St Cuthbert‘s Chapel Ruins
Religious Place In Duddo, Northumberland
Ruins of a late 18th century chapel close to the River Tweed

St Cuthbert's Chapel has been on my to-do list for a long time and we got the opportunity recently to visit in October 2025. It is not an easy place to get to, but we opted to park at Twizel Bridge and walked to the chapel from there. This was a 4.5km round trip meaning we could also stop and visit Twizel Bridge and Twizel Castle too and get ourselves some points for the leaderboard. The chapel sits in a farmers field close to where the River Tweed and River Till meet and is situated on the Twizel Castle estate.

The chapel is not quite what I was expecting - after some research I found it is a fairly modern building and is described as a 'Gothick folly' built in the 1790s. Sir Frances Blake of Delaval fame began making the changes to the chapel, and was also responsible for the major (and ultimately incomplete) rebuilding of nearby Twizel Castle. It was created by Gothicising the remains of an older chapel, sometimes referred to as St. Catherine's, and renamed to St. Cuthbert's. There had been a chapel on this site since 1311, however, nothing remains of this original church.

Local legend says that St Cuthbert's body was brought here to rest, but we have no way of knowing whether this was true. We think this was more likely a place of pilgrimage for followers of St Cuthbert as it would have been a bit of a detour to bring him here. Neither St Cuthbert's Way or his final route to Durham Cathedral go past this site, however it would have been a place of comfort for some. It is a beautiful area here and you're treated to some fab views of the borders and into Scotland.

As mentioned, the chapel sits in a farmer's field and is just off the public footpath so we have no photographs of the interior. I have seen images online from inside, however, we didn't want to trample through the crops, so worth bearing in mind if you visit.

We parked at Twizel Bridge, wandered along past Twizel Castle and crossed the River Till over another foot bridge. This was a 4.5km walk, there and back.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
