Tom Tallon's Crag
Crag, Rock And Cairn In The Cheviots, Northumberland
A cairn up near Yeavering Bell at the northern end of the Cheviots which has roots in local folklore.
If you're having a wander up near Yeavering Bell in the northern part of the Northumberland National Park, then keep your eyes peeled for a little crag popping out of the heather. This is Tom Tallon's Crag there are a canny few stories about it.
The Ordnance Survey Name Book of 1860 suggests a tradition that Tom Tallon was a warrior slain at the site.
The name "Tom" may derive from "a rounded hill," and "Tallon" might come from "tal," meaning forehead or promontory, and "Llan," an enclosure. Another older name for the crag is "Auld Wife's Apronful of Stones," linked to myths of a giantess dropping stones to form cairns.
If you want to venture there yourself then best place to park is Wooler Common and then follow St. Cuthbert's Way all the way to the crag.
Follow the route or open it on OS Maps. Just under 6km and 251m of climbing.
