Auchope Cairn
Crag, Rock And Cairn In The Cheviots, Northumberland
A cairn on the cusp of the Cheviot and right on the border of England And Scotland.
I read somewhere that Auchope Cairn had one of the best views in the north and I am finding it difficult to disagree. This cairn sits on Auchope Rigg right on the border between England and Scotland.
Standing like a sentinel over the beautiful Hen Hole, Auchope Cairn has views over the Cheviot, the Schil and Scotland to the west. Apparently on a clear day you can see the north sea and the Lake District. I don't think my eyes work that well!
On the opposite side of the Hen Hole basin on West Hill are two cairns similar to this one.
If you also want to savour the views then the closest place to park is Mounthooly Bunkhouse, although you will need a College Valley day pass to park here. Here is a map taking you direct to the top.
It's around 4.5km from the bunkhouse and nearly 500m of ascent!
It's a shame to just head straight here and back when there are so many other fabulous places nearby. Why not walk up the Hen Hole, then it's a short scramble to Auchope Cairn. Then maybe head up to the Schil before descending back to the bunkhouse.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
