Easter Island Heads In Jonno’s Field

Art In Scarborough, North Yorkshire

Eight wooden sculptures inspired by Easter Island’s Moai heads in Scarborough.

If you're fascinated by the Moai heads on Easter Island, but feel it's a bit too far to travel to see them in the flesh, then heading off to Scarborough might be an alternative.

Overlooking Scarborough in an area known as Jonno's Field are eight wooden sculptures inspired by Easter Island's Moai heads.

Situated in a semi-circle were created by the local artist David Shepherd in 2015.

But what on earth has Scarborough got to do with Easter Island? Well historically, Scarborough was a significant port and had lots of trade connections to the Pacific. In the 18th century, sailors returning from voyages often brought back souvenirs, including Moai statues, showing off the town's maritime heritage and cultural exchanges with their trade pals in the Pacific.

It's just a short walk up and you get some smashing views over Scarborough too!

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
