Green Humbleton Hillfort
Hillfort In The Cheviots, Northumberland
An old hillfort sitting on top of Green Humbleton in the borders.
While off hill bagging trying to conquer the 99 hills in the Cheviots over 300m, I spotted a little canonical hill just over the border. These type of hills were perfect for hillforts and settlements, so checking the map, there indeed was a hillfort on top of Green Humbleton Hill.
At ground level you can usually just see a few stones and traces of ramparts, but if you have a set of tall stilts then you can get a much better view.
We did a bit of research and found that this is a scooped settlement and dates to Romano-British times. It consists of an oval scooped enclosure with a D-shaped addition on to its northern side.
With it sitting right on the border between England and Scotland, I can only imagine it has seen some action back in the day.
Just on the banks of the hill are the Stob Stones where kings and queens of the Yetholm gypsies were crowned.
If you want to visit Green Humbleton Hillfort then the easiest way is to park at Kirk Yetholm and follow the Pennine Way which takes you right to the bottom of the hillfort. Then it's just a short jaunt up.
Follow the route above or open on OS Maps. Just 1km walk with 152m of climbing.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
