You know what it's like. You're having a lovely walk in the Cheviots when you spot something on the map called the Stob Stones. It's a 6km diversion from your current route, but you'll never live with yourself if you don't go and investigate. (Wasn't disappointed!)
The Stob Stones or (Stob Stanes if you are from over the border in Scotland) are known locally as the Gypsy Stobs as they mark the spot where the gypsy kings and queens of Yetholm were crowned.
These stones would have been boundary stones marking the border between England and Scotland, however the actual border is now a canny distance west.
They may date to early medieval times as they are located on a part of the border that the English commissioners of 1222 regarded as fixed.
The stones are made of native porphyry (a type of granite) and while one still stands, the other is recumbent.
If you fancy crowning yourself king or queen of the Yetholm Gypsies, then the easist route is to park your car on the outskirts of the town and walk up the Pennine Way, skirting Green Humbleton Hillfort and towards the border.
Follow the route above or open on OS Maps. Only 1.5km from the parking, but 195m of climbing.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
