This is the Hill of Tarvit trig point sits on a hill next to the National Trust mansion (211m) near Craigrothie.

The monument on the Hill of Tarvit was constructed in 1817 by the Laird of Wemysshall. It was originally topped with the old mercat (market) cross from Cupar, which was supposedly won in a game with the provost (civic head) of the town.
However, in 1897 it was returned to the town, and the cast iron replacement with installed, in celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.

The National Trust for Scotland car park for the mansion is the starting point, where there is a charge if you are not a National Trust member. From there, head north on the path through the woods.

At the end of the wood, climb over the stile.

Then pass through the gate and head up to the monument.

Its a steep little climb but short and it soon levels out.

The views from the top are far reaching and well worth the little climb.

There are panels at each side of the monument describing what can be seen in each direction. There is also a information board in the car park that provides information of the estate including the monument. Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit the estate, what a brilliant excuse to return another time.

It is around 0.5km to the trig with 80m of ascent.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
