St Monans Doocot is another fine example of a 16th century beehive Doocot, that can be found in this area. It is perched on the clifftops to the south west of St Monans.

The Doocot belonged to Newark Castle and would have supplied pigeon meat and eggs to the residents.

Although Newark Castle was built in the 15th century by the Kinloch family, it was the Sandilands of Cruivie who built the Doocot, after the castle was passed to them through marriage.

Positioned conveniently between St Monans Auld Kirk and Newark Castle, it makes for a fantastic short coastal walk to visit them all. There is plenty of parking at St Monans Auld Kirk, where you can pick up the coastal path heading south west.

Although I tried to access the Doocot, the door and bolt was firmly rusted in place. However, if you want to get an idea of how it would have looked inside, it is worth visiting the Priory Doocot in Crail, which has undergone extensive restoration work.

It has to be said that the pigeons would have had a fantastic view over the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock.

St Monans Doocot is a Scheduled Monument with Historic Environment Scotland.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
