Lindisfarne Gospel Garden
Landscape In Holy Island, Northumberland
Garden inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels, opened in 2004.
Considering how many visits I make to Holy Island every month (I can't keep away! I love it!) I found something new to me on my last visit. Lindisfarne Gospel Garden is a real hidden gem, off the beaten track and when I visited on a busy weekday during the summer holidays, there was no one else there.
This is a lovely spot to sit & relax and admire all of the different plant species. I'm definitely no expert when it comes to flowers, but I know someone who is, so I can confidently say there were Beach Aster, Baby Sage, Hydrangea, Geranium, Poppies and Dahlia amongst many others.
The garden was designed by the head of Newcastle Council's Park's & Gardens department, Stan Timmins, in the early 2000s. He entered the design into the Chelsea Flower Show in 2003 and won a silver medal for his work. After discussion with Holy Island's Development Trust, it was decided the design would be replicated on the island and it was opened in 2004 by Lady Rose Crossman.
A great spot for some time away from the crowds, and you can make a donation to the upkeep of the garden in the box by the entrance.
There's so much more to see on Holy Island so if you have a good few hours to spare, you can explore a few of our suggestions on the website: Holy Island. A shout out to Pilgrim's Gelato too, just down the road from the garden, who do the best vegan ice cream you'll ever have.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
