Low Cleughs Bastle

Bastle In Ridsdale, Northumberland

A ruined 17th-century bastle, or fortified farmhouse, situated on a south-east slope of moorland on the edge Ridsdale.

While visiting the Ridsdale Iron Works, we saw another little bastle on the map and promptly added it to our to do list. This one is the Low Cleughs Bastle and is nestled on a southeast slope of moorland, overlooking a gentle tributary of the River Rede.

There isn't much more we can tell you about bastles that you haven't read in our other posts. As you know they were fortified farmhouses protecting people and cattle from the Border Rievers.

The bastles tended to have 2 floors with cattle on the bottom and the family occupying the upper level.

With dimensions measuring around 13m by 7.5m externally, the strong walls were nearly 1.5m thick!

It's just a short 5 minute walk from the car park and you can see the bastle from here. Follow the fingerpost as it keeps you to the left side of this fence and on to the open land.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
