Pittenweem Fishermen's Memorial
Statue In Fife, Scotland
A memorial dedicated to the local fisher folk of Pittenweem, that lost their lives at sea.

The Pittenweem Fishermen's Memorial is a beautiful bronze sculpture that stands between the Old Westhaven Harbour and the New Harbour in Pittenweem, overlooking the Firth of Forth.
While on a trip to Fife we stopped at the pretty little fishing village of Pittenweem to visit St Fillans Cave. While parking, I spotted this fabulous sculpture and wanted to find out a bit more about it.

It was all thanks to the efforts of the Pittenweem Fishermen's Memorial Association, who spent 4 years raising funds to commission the piece. The bronze sculpture which stands on a granite plinth is 2.5m tall. It was created by Alan Herriot and was erected at its pride of place on September 28th 2019.

The sculpture depicts an anxious mother and child, the child looking up at his mother who is staring out to sea, wondering whether her husband will return.

It is dedicated to the fisher folk, who made their living from the sea, and to those who lost their lives in so doing. It provides visible recognition of the hardships and dangers endured in the fishing industry. The Pittenweem Fishermen's Memorial Association hope it will convey a sense of quiet reflection and remembrance, for those who took part in fishing, and contributed to the history and heritage of the area. I think on this quest they were highly successful.

As you are so close, why not visit Pittenweem Old Westhaven Harbour and the Pittenweem Lighthouse.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
