When plotting a route to walk around Loch Morlich, I spotted a monument (Mon) symbol on the OS Map. Curiosity got the better of me, so off I went to explore.
Hidden in the trees on the roadside opposite Loch Morlich is the memorial, which commemorates two events and may have been relocated from its original position.

The 8,600-acre Glenmore Forest was purchased from the Duke of Gordon by the Forestry Commission in 1923. It contains what remains of the Caledonian Forest in the Cairngorm National Park. In 1935 it was named the Queen's Forest in celebration of the King's silver jubilee. The name has since reverted to Glenmore.
The memorial contains two plaques. The first commemorates the silver jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935.
The second commemorates the planting of the surrounding trees to mark the marriage between the then Prince of Wales and his first wife, Lady Diana Spencer, in 1981. The trees have long outlasted the marriage and, very sadly, Princess Diana, who was killed in a car accident in 1997.

My research suggested that the memorial was initially erected on the Sluggan Pass area in 1935. However, the Loch Morlich car park opposite is the starting point of the Sluggan Pass route, so I'm not sure how far it has actually travelled.

Once you've visited the memorial, why not spend some time enjoying Loch Morlich or the Glenmore Forest? There is plenty to enjoy.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
