School Aycliffe Water Tower

Water Tower In Newton Aycliffe, County Durham

A disused water tower that once supplied Aycliffe Hospital.

On our recent visit to North Yorkshire, we passed by this water tower at School Aycliffe and had to stop for a closer look. It is located right on the edge of the village of School Aycliffe and sits in a field overlooking the beautiful Durham countryside.

As with a lot of water towers we can't find much info on it, but we believe it used to supply Aycliffe Hospital with water from the 1950s until it closed in the 1990s. The hospital is no longer there and has been replaced by a housing estate known as The Chestnuts.

Apparently, Aycliffe Hospital inspired some ideas for the TV show The League of Gentlemen as writer Mark Gattiss' father worked there as an engineer for a time.

In the past it looks like the doors and windows to the tower were all boarded up, however, the window board had been taken down so we were able to peek inside. Not that you can see much, but there was a ladder leading up to the top level where the water tank would have been.

I reckon Simon might need to get Red5 on the case and get some drone shots at some point.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
