Ushaw Home Farm
Building In Ushaw Moor, County Durham
Abandoned farm buildings built around 1851.
When researching Croxdale Hall Haybarn, I discovered that Ushaw in County Durham also has some disused farm buildings and they looked pretty impressive. When we visited the abandoned farm, the main building felt quite foreboding. I'm not sure if it was the time of day we visited, but there was a noisy gang of crows soaring around us and the whole place felt very eerie. There are also some hostile signs telling you to behave too, and it felt like we definitely shouldn't be there. However, we still had a bit of a nose about and took a few pictures. Gates keep you from getting too close but you can still get a good idea of how it would have looked in it's heyday.
The farm was built between 1851 and 1852 by Joseph Hansom and many of the original features still remain inside. There are three levels to the main building, but sadly the exterior is looking in a bit of a sorry state in parts. The main building consists of cowhouses, stables and 'loose boxes' (a large stable where horses can move freely) with haylofts on the third floor. There are a few other buildings dotted about the site and what appears to be an abandoned house which has a number of smashed windows adding to the hostile vibe of the place. It seems a shame that this mighty impressive place has just been left to rot, but hopefully future funding will bring it back to life.
The farm is owned by Ushaw College and is just down the road from the college itself. A large part of the college has already been restored and is open to the public, however, there is also an abandoned part of the college known as the Junior House which requires extensive work. A lottery grant of £150,000 has been secured to help restore the abandoned college, however, a recent fire in the Chapel of St Aloysius means there is now a lot more work to do. £400,000 has been awarded by Historic England to carry out the extensive repairs on top of the lottery funding.
Obviously Home Farm is not somewhere to spend the day and bring a picnic, but it's an interesting place all the same. Try Ushaw College instead if you're looking for a day out with the family.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
