Cunyan Crags And Stone Circle Walk

I love a trip over to Ingram and the Breamish Valley. Even if you're not going to climb any hills and just fancy a picnic and a paddle in the burn, you're still surrounded by smashing scenery.

But the cracking view of Cunyan Crags always tempts me to have a wander up. As the knees were still a bit sore from the previous walk, today was just going to be a short wander up onto the crags of Dunmoor Hill and then trying to find the stone circle near Cunyan Crags.

From the parking at Hartside you get your first view of Cunyan Crags and it doesn't seem too far away.

As the road heads into Linhope Village there is a big gated area with a fingerpost and this takes me up onto the banks of Dunmoor Hill. From here it's just a short, sharp climb up to the first crag of the day - Cat Crag.

I'm not sure why the Northumberland Crag Naming Committee (I have just made that organisation up!) named it Cat Crag, maybe it resembles a feline. It certainly doesn't from down here. Let's have a look from a different angle.

Then from here it is just a short walk to Long Crag. I understand why they named it that.

And if you look over in the distance you can just make out Cunyan Crags.

I send my little drone up to get a better view of Cunyan Crags.

Absolutely cracking and I can also see a few clear paths heading over to it. I follow the path that takes me near the summit of Dunmoor Hill as this gives me a fab view looking down onto the crags.

I have visited Cunyan Crags on quite a few occasions with my drone and every time the weather conspires against me. Usually it tempts me with no wind in the valley, but as soon as I get here, it's like a hurricane. Fortunately there was little wind today. Unfortunately the sun is being unusually low and bright.

I also grab a few quick snaps from ground level too.

Now if you know where to look, you can see the stone circle from Cunyan Crags. Just point your eyes east and have a look out for a sheephold. It's right next to that.

I tried to do a bit of research to find out who built it, why they built it, when it was built, but I couldn't find anything. So I think I will just name this one the Dunmoor Hill Stone Circle.

If you're too lazy to count, there are 9 stones on the outside with a flat centre stone.

From here I pick up the track again and follow this all the way down to Greensidehill. This takes me back onto the main road and from there it's just a short walk back to the car. As I am walking I get one last photo of Cunyan Crags.
